Golden Principles of Hadith Compilation
While the Qur’an was compiled and standardized under the guidance of the Caliphs, the compilation of Hadith remained a subject of debate. It was undertaken by individuals in the 2nd and 3rd centuries Hijrah, As a result, authentic pearls of wisdom were mixed with unreliable reports, which are used by unscruplious elements for their mischievous designs. This necessitates careful distinction.
After extensive deliberation, the following Seven Golden Principles of Hadith Knowledge (علم الحديث کے سات سنہری اصول – علم الحديث سبع قواعد ذهبية) have been derived from the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:
- The Qur’an can Supersedes Hadith – The Qur’an holds the highest authority; Hadith can not override or abrogate it.
- Hadith Must Align with the Qur’an and Sunnah – Any narration contradicting these primary sources must be questioned.
- Hadith Must Be Intellectually and Rationally Sound – It should be in harmony with reason and understanding.
- Distinguishing Between Hadith Qudsi and Prophetic Hadith – Recognizing the difference between divinely inspired Hadith Qudsi and the sayings of the Prophet ﷺ be kept in view.
- Evaluating the Chain of Narrators (Isnad) and Text (Matn) – Ensuring authenticity through rigorous scrutiny.
- Faith in Only One Divine Book – The Qur’an – The Qur’an remains the ultimate guide, and no other text holds the same status.
- Memorization and Transmission of Hadith – Hadith should be preserved and conveyed with precision and responsibility through memorization (Digital and IA technology may be explored)
These principles serve as a framework for assessing Hadith authenticity and can be refined further if better approaches emerge.
