Zakir Naik: Why India wants to arrest the preacher?

He has 16 million followers on Facebook, 150,000 on Twitter and has given more than 4,000 lectures on Islam across the world. But Zakir Abdul Karim Naik, the popular televangelist and Islamic preacher, is now wanted by the Indian authorities.
Problems arose for the preacher last summer, after Bangladeshi authorities said that one of the gunmen responsible for an attack on a cafe in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, which left 22 people dead, had been inspired by him.
Bangladesh responded by banning Peace TV, an Islamic channel broadcast from Dubai which Naik founded in 2006 and which claims to reach 100 million people worldwide.
The 51-year-old denied supporting violence, releasing a video statement in which he said: "Killing innocent beings is the second major sin in Islam."
But in November, India's counterterrorism agency, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), filed a First Information Report, an official police complaint, against Naik and the Mumbai-based non-profit Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) that he founded in 1991, accusing him of indulging in unlawful activities and promoting religious hatred.
The Hindu nationalist government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded by imposing a five-year ban on the IRF under the country's anti-terror laws.
'Illegal, unjustified, unwarranted'
Naik's lawyer, Mubeen Solkar, told Al Jazeera that he will "challenge the ban before an appropriate court".
"We have got sufficient grounds to show that the ban was not only illegal but also unjustified and unwarranted," he added.
India's Enforcement Directorate, which investigates economic crimes, has accused the IRF of money laundering and closed its properties in Mumbai. An educational trust run by Naik has also been prevented from receiving funds from abroad.
Solkar denies that his client has been involved in money laundering. "All the transactions were done through banks and all the funds came through legal channels," he said.
"There is nothing to show that any of the amounts would constitute proceeds of crime, which is a requirement under the PML Act [Prevention of Money Laundering Act]."

Where is Naik now?

Naik has not returned to India since last July.
His whereabouts are currently not known, although he has in recent months given interviews and conducted a press conference via Skype from Saudi Arabia, which has bestowed on him one of the country's highest awards for "service to Islam".
There have been rumours that he has been granted Saudi citizenship, but there has been no official confirmation of this.
He has offered to be questioned via video-conferencing, but the Indian authorities have refused, and earlier this month approached Interpol, the International Police Organisation, seeking his arrest and return to India.
Naik considers this to be part of a broader Indian government agenda.
In September, before the charges were filed and the ban imposed, Naik wrote an open letter in which he said: "This is not just an attack on me, it's an attack against Indian Muslims. And it's an attack against peace, democracy and justice."
In a subsequent open letter after the charges and ban, he wrote: "IRF and I were set up for a ban .... It is now proven that the decision to ban IRF was taken months ago and it was a communal decision. Before investigations were done, even before reports [were] submitted, the ban was already decided ... Whether it was owing to my religion or some other reason does not matter. What matters now is that my work of 25 years - completely lawful work - has been banned. And that is the most unfortunate thing for this country."

'Hounded by the media'

His view is shared by many within India's Muslim community, members of which have come under attack from far-right Hindu groups associated with Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Kashif-ul-Huda is the editor of news website TwoCircles.net, which focuses on Muslim issues in India. He feels Naik has been targeted because he is a Muslim.
"Some of the statements of Zakir Naik are problematic and his style confrontational, but he never preached violence. His lectures were always open and recordings freely available," he said.
"If such a person can be hounded by the Indian media without a shred of evidence, you can imagine what happens to lesser mortals who get arrested on trumped-up charges," he added, alluding to a number of cases where Muslims have been jailed on terror charges only later to be found innocent.
But BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli refuted the charges of bias and told Al Jazeera: "[The] Indian judicial system is known for its impartiality. It may be slow, but everyone gets justice eventually.
"India does not require [a] certificate of its secular identity from [Zakir] Naik, who is an absconder," Kohli added.
Solkar, Naik's lawyer, stressed that his client had not committed any offence under the anti-terror UAPA law.
Six months after the police complaint was filed, Solkar said "no charge-sheet has been filed so far before the NIA court".
But Kohli from the BJP said that the charges and evidence against Naik are "significant".
"That he has spoken in support of organisations engaged in gruesome terror is documented and available," he added.
"If he has done no wrong he has nothing to fear. But if he absconds, he is only going to raise further questions about his conduct and evidence against him."
The Indian authorities have previously accused Naik of influencing young people in southern Kerala state to join the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS). But Naik has denied these charges and has criticised ISIL, referring to it as the "anti-Islamic state".

Controversy

The doctor-turned-televangelist has been a figure of some controversy since the early 1990s.
Naik insists that his dawah work - the act of proselytising for Islam - is allowed by the constitution, which permits every citizen to follow and propagate their religion. But the issue of conversion remains controversial and several states have anti-conversion laws.
Some have accused Naik of using sectarian language, while parody videos making fun of what critics call his "illogical arguments" have been posted on YouTube.
There have been media reports that at one of his public talks he called on all Muslims to become terrorists - a statement Naik has said was taken out of context.
He has been denied a visa to the UK and Canada, while Malaysia has banned his lectures. Hindraf, a Malaysian minority rights group, is demanding that Malaysia cancel Naik's permanent residency there.
Mohammad Reyaz, who teaches communication at Aliah University in Kolkata, explains that Naik began preaching at a time when India was witnessing a rise in far-right Hindu groups.
The medieval-era Babri mosque in the city of Ayodhya was demolished in 1992 by a Hindu nationalist mob, who wanted to build a temple in its place. The temple movement was spearheaded by Lal Krishna Advani - a one-time mentor of Prime Minister Modi.
Mumbai, Naik's home city, was ravaged by religious riots in the aftermath of the mosque's demolition, which left around 1,700 dead across the country, the majority Muslims.
"In the 1990s, after the demolition of Babri masjid [mosque], Muslims felt betrayed and dejected. Traditional clerics in those times - and even now - totally appeared out of sync with [the] time," Reyaz explained.
"Naik filled the leadership vacuum and overnight turned into [a] messiah for young Muslim youth looking for some escape. He not only provided them [with] answers to all the Islamophobic questions Muslims had to face every day, but gave a new-found confidence in who they were."
Reyaz explains that part of his appeal to younger and educated Muslims comes from the fact that he is "articulate and speaks in English and wears a Western suit".
In 2009, Peace TV Urdu was launched, followed by Peace TV Bangla in April 2011.
In 2012, Peace TV was banned by the previous Indian government headed by the centre-left Congress Party. India's intelligence agencies have been wary of Peace TV as it propagates the Wahabi school of Islam.
"Naik being the face of this brand of Islam in India [he] became the easy target," explained Reyaz.
"The Islamophobia has filtered down to a stage where all conservative Muslims are seen as possible terrorists; the distinction between conservatism and extremism has got blurred."

Dr. Zakir Naik under Criticism and Media Trial

Clean chit to Zakir Naik, Maharashtra SID

In a major relief for Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik and his millions of followers the Maharashtra State Intelligence Department (SID) has given a clean chit to the televangelist  and has decided not to arrest him on his arrival at Mumbai.
The SID  found no reason to register a case against the Islamic preacher for now. Zakir Naik, who cancelled his plan to return to India on Monday, has been given clean chit by SID, that is handling the investigation of the Zakir Naik case ordered by the Maharashtra government. The SID sources added that Zakir Naik will not and cannot be arrested on his return to India based on the evidence against him.
The SID, after watching and listening hundreds of YouTube videos and speeches given by the controversial preacher Zakir Naik in and out of India, reached to the conclusion that no case can be made out against him for now, except the charge of hurting religious sentiments. The SID also investigated the evidences collected from the other intelligence teams in various states and found no direct or indirect link between Zakir Naik and terrorists.
“There is no case to be made out against the English-speaking preacher, except maybe the possible charge of hurting religious sentiments, but even that cannot be established from his speeches. We are tracking his movements and only if he speaks out of turn, can we ‘pin’ him down on a charge. For now, we are closely monitoring him,” a senior police official was quoted as saying by the The Hindu.
The  report also said that the SID officers found no strong evidence to link Zakir Naik to terror-related activities. The officials also said that Naik’s past controversial statements Taliban, Osama bin Laden and ISIS do not result in any direct or indirect charges against him. Zakir Naik’s speeches are believed to have inspired some of the Bangladeshi militants, who killed 22 people, mostly foreigners, at an upscale restaurant in Dhaka on July 1.  http://muslimmirror.com/eng/clean-chit-to-zakir-naik-maharashtra-sid-wont-arrest-the-islamic-preacher/

Dr.Zakir Naik is not liked by Hindu extremist groups who consider him as a threat to their faith, quoting Hindu holy scriptures, converting Hindus openly with the consent of people.  Many traditional Muslim Mullah also dislike him as he is threat to their restricted traditional percepts. The Christians clergy becomes speechless in front of him when he quotes Bible to disprove their arguments. However he is worldwide popular liked by millions due to his logical modern approach.

"O you who believe, if a wicked person brings any news to you, you shall first investigate, lest you commit injustice towards some people, out of ignorance, then become sorry and remorseful for what you have done."(Quran;49:6)

Here’s full statement by Dr.Zakir Naik:

According to me, the media is the most important weapon in the world. It can convert a hero into villain or even a villain into a hero. I'm shocked at the media trial on me regarding the recent terrorist attack that took place in Dhaka Bangladesh on 1st July 2016. Most of the clips shown on the television of myself are either out of context, half statements or doctored. So are my statements in the print media.

I would have loved to give interviews whether for television channels or for the print media, but I fear that most of them will not publish it unedited or without twisting it. I came to this conclusion after I had given a few interviews, most of which were unfortunately mutilated and mis-utilised to serve the vested agenda of the channel or the newspaper.

If time permits, God willing, in the next few days I will give replies to some of the major allegations on video and give it to the media as well as put it up on social media as well as other public platforms so that the original answers are also available if the media misutilises it.

So far not a single official Indian government agency has contacted me for any clarification regarding this issue. It would be my pleasure to cooperate with any official Indian government investigation agency for any information they might require from me.

In conclusion, I repeat what I have always maintained - I DO NOT SUPPORT TERRORISM OR VIOLENCE in any form whatsoever. I have never supported any terrorist organisations and have mentioned this over and over again in thousands of my public talks worldwide. I STRONGLY CONDEMN anyone taking my statements out of context and using it for VIOLENCE OF ANY FORM."
Yours sincerely,
Dr Zakir Naik

Islamic preacher Zakir Naik has sought support from the Muslim community against what he called was a “media trial” over allegedly provocative statements promoting militant views that have triggered calls for his arrest.

Introducing a new Twitter handle -- @drzakirofficial – the Mumbai-based preacher also appealed to people around the world to “eliminate terrorism from our midst”.

Naik has come under the scanner of the Indian government after reports emerged that two among a group of terrorists who killed 20 people in a posh Dhaka café last week were allegedly inspired by his speeches.

“I, Dr Zakir Naik, Call upon all my Muslim Brothers & Sisters to Support me against the “Media Trials” and Let Justice Prevail (sic),” Naik tweeted.

Naik, 51, founder of the Mumbai-based Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), also introduced his new Twitter handle on his Facebook page. Within an hour of Naik’s thousands of likes. He is also the founder of Peace TV Bangla and Peace TV Urdu.

Why Dr.Zakir Naik is Criticised & by Whom?

Dr.Zakir Naik is not liked by:
1) Hindu extremist groups who consider him as a threat to their faith, converting Hindus openly with consent of people.

2) Extremist politicians and their supporters who are criticised by Dr.Zakir Naik for atrocities committed against Muslims. [killing of Muslims in Gujarat (Narindra Modi was CM), demolition of Babri Masjid and instigating communal riots].

3) Many traditional Muslim Mullah also dislike him as he is threat to their restricted traditional percepts.

4) The Christians clergy becomes speechless in front of him when he quotes Bible to disprove their arguments.
His critics have open choice to confront him publicly in open debates to defeat him with arguments, but any one who tried was humiliated with strong logical arguments by Zakir. In desperation they resort to his media trial and character assassination at social media.

He is worldwide popular, liked by millions due to his logical modern approach. Why people like him despite not being 100% in agreement with him? Here are some reasons:

1) He gives references from Holy Texts to support his arguments, any one can check back and draw conclusions, even if one does not agree with his  interpretation.

2) He does not give pessimistic, docile, submissive percepts. He is realistic which may pinch those opposed to Islam. If Muslim lands are being occupied, they are under oppression like Palestine,  Afghanistan,  Kashmir etc, should they keep on getting killed by occupation forces or resist? Even if one is not religious what does the commonsense says?

4) His approach/ views on many subjects is different to the traditional [Muqalideen, blind followers of 4 Sunni Imams]. For example:
a) Women Covering Face: Dr.Zakir Naik proves from Quran and Hadith that Muslim women need not to cover her face, while traditionalists views are opposite.

b) Traditional Muslim Ulema consider Western dress as Haram or Makrooh but Dr.Zakir Naik is dressed up in Western Suit, necktie and speaks in English.

c) According too Dr. Zakir, Apostasy, is not punishable with death under normal circumstances, while traditionalists think it is punishable with death. The Terrorist Takfiri use this  traditional view to kill innocent Muslims.

d) According too Dr. Zakir, Muslims can touch Quran even without ablution (Wadhu) while traditional Muslim scholars think it is forbidden. Hence deprive Muslims to frequently approach/read Quran. Dr. Zakir, has made Quran as household frequently approachable Holy Book not to be kept away wrapped up in almirah.

e) Dr. Zakir, thinks that 911 was inside job, this  view is  shared by many Americans and there are websites. So its not a crime, to make him target to hate.
Dr.Zakir criticises George Bush and Tony Blair for deceit to attack Iraq and Muslim lands, the fact proved now and regretted by Blair. Whole Zionist lobby and mafia is after him.
One may agree or disagree with Dr.Zakir Naik, he is just a human being, a scholar not a prophet. But accusing him to support terrorism to  settle  the score is unfair especially those who are themselves allegedly involved in mass killings. The oppressor rulers fear the teachings of Quran which are against oppression and exploitation, demand justice, equality and fairness, hence any one preaching such human values is bitterly opposed. Initially during early two centuries the Islamic  thought was progressive and dynamic, but after second century of Hijrah 8/9th Century C.E it became stagnant after establishment of four school of jurisprudence. Dr,Muhammad Iqbal emphasised "The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam" but Muslim societies under the clutches of traditional clergy made little progress. People like Dr.Zakir Naik are natural product of such intellectual stagnation. The traditional Islamic institutions like Deoband or Al-Azhar failed to produce any modern scholar of repute with exception of one or two. The Takfiri Doctrine of Terror is  not brainchild of Dr.Zakir Naik.

Takfiri Taliban involved in terrorism and suicide bombing in Pakistan and Afghanistan, they are followers of Deoband school, should we close Deoband on terror charges?
No, Deoband is doing good job, it has renounced Terrorism by issuinng a Fatwa. If some people are misguided then Deoband cannot be blamed for their misdeeds. Similarly if some facebook fans of Dr.Zakir Naik indulge in terrorism,  how can he be blamed without any direct involvement or evidence? Its absurd.

Its time for Muslims to rise up to meet the challenges of modern era by producing scholars of calibe to satisfy the intellectually aware youth. Suppression, state terrorism will not work. Violence breeds more violence.  http://goo.gl/dUI0xX

It is a compilation of lectures delivered by Muhammad Iqbal on Islamic philosophy; it was published in 1930. These lectures were delivered by Iqbal in Madras, Hyderabad, and Aligarh. The last chapter, "Is Religion Possible", was added to the book from the 1934 Oxford Edition onwards. In Reconstruction, Iqbal called for a re-examination of the intellectual foundations of Islamic philosophy. The book is a major work of modern Islamic thought. It was a major influence on Iranian sociologist Ali Shariati and other contemporary Muslim reformers, including Tariq Ramadan. Keep reading >>>>
